Ferns have always been considered special and lucky charms. They are also masters of photosynthesis and thrive almost everywhere. The "Fernhaus" is also a particularly green spot and brings holiday luck. Stefan Kofler and his wife Franziska have returned to the origins of the place. The accommodation was built where the family's guesthouse was in operation until last year and where ferns previously grew. Thus, the ferns are not only the namesake, but also the symbol of the place's closeness to nature and the reinterpreted tradition.
Above all, the spectacular view over the green Tyrolean mountains and the Merano Valley makes this accommodation so special. The two panoramic apartments are bright and welcoming, with large windows and south-facing terraces. Harmonious colors and high-quality materials such as the chestnut wood kitchens, the satin bed linens, and the (fern) green velvet for the sofas create a cozy atmosphere and, at the same time, ensure tranquility through minimalist clarity. Because tranquility, along with nature, is the focus here.
The apartments are designed for self-catering – including a delicious bread roll service from the local master baker. Guests are also welcome to pick herbs and flowers from the family garden. The region is known for its particularly good climate – a benefit not only for the ferns, but also for the many vineyards and orchards in the area. Product quality and enjoyment are paramount here. Therefore, a small shop with local products such as chocolate from Merano, coffee from the Vinschgau Valley, stationery from the neighboring village, and books by local authors is planned.
The family built the house in 1972 and completely remodeled it starting in fall 2021. All construction companies involved in the renovation are from South Tyrol, as are the materials, wherever possible. Wherever possible, things are renovated rather than purchased new. For example, the old fence was quickly repainted, and the apartments feature chairs from the former inn.
Guests are welcome to help themselves to the herbs from the herb garden, and fresh bread is delivered daily from the bakery. The hosts would like to keep a few chickens in the long term, which would not only lay fresh eggs but also serve as natural composters.
For handicrafts, the hosts try to use workshops that offer rehabilitation programs for people suffering from alcohol and drug addiction or gambling addiction.
In addition to avoiding (plastic) waste, the waste that does arise is separated, attention is drawn to minimizing water consumption, and cleaning is done with biodegradable cleaning products.
Upon request, a lady can be arranged to provide an in-house massage. Two yoga mats are also available for guests in each apartment. There are no televisions in the apartments, so guests can listen to the birdsong, and the fitness trail starts right outside the front door.
